Course Description:
This course provides paraprofessionals & home school instructors with theoretical and practical knowledge regarding research based reading instruction.

Course Goal:
To provide paraprofessionals & home school instructors with an opportunity to gain practical understandings of research based reading instruction and to apply those understandings.

Objectives:

  • To learn the definition of research based reading instruction 
  • Understand, identify, and use systematic and explicit instructional models.
  • Gain basic knowledge of the parts of research based reading instruction.
  • Gain basic knowledge of different methods of instruction and a variety of reading programs
  • Effectively adapt teaching style & program parts to meet the needs of children in reading classes.
  • Become critical thinkers about research based instruction. 
  • To apply knowledge about research based reading instruction in interaction with students
Course Overview:
This course consists of three modules:
  1. Required Reading

  2. Glossary & Research Articles
  3. Application

  4. Critical thinking exercises designed to help apply knowledge to different situations and students
  5. Developmental Coaching

  6. E-mail support for Q & A on the covered material
Each module will be explored for each of the areas of research based instruction in reading which include the following areas:
General Research Based Reading Instruction Information
Phonemic Awareness
Phonics
Vocabulary
Fluidity
Comprehension
Course Modules are:  Required Reading, Developmental Coaching and Application
Course Time Line:
Week # 1 Define research based reading and explicit and systematic instructional methods. Distribute & review required reading list.
Week # 2 Review glossary and time line for assignments.  General research based reading instruction quiz due.
Week # 3 Phonemic Awareness - Assessments, programs, & techniques
Week # 4 Phonics- Assessments, programs, & techniques.  Phonemic Awareness quiz due
Week # 5 Vocabulary- Assessments, programs, & techniques.  Phonics quiz due
Week # 6 Fluency- Assessments, programs, & techniques.  Vocabulary quiz due
Week # 7 Comprehension- Assessments, programs, & techniques.  Fluency quiz due
Week # 8 Comprehension quiz & any extra credit papers due
Week # 9 Comprehensive test on research based reading instruction due
Requirements:
Quizzes on the following topics: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension - 10 points each (60 points total)
Final test on overall Research Based Reading Instruction - 40 points

Possible Total - 100 points

*All extra credit points must be approved (in writing) by the instructor before submitting the assignment for a grade.
Grading Scale
    91-100  =  A
    81-90   =   B
    71-80   =   C
    61-70   =   D
 

Assignments:
  • Required reading & quizzes in each of the 6 areas
    • E-mail submission 
  • Final cumulative test on all information about research based reading instruction.
  • Extra Credit (possible 5 points for each of the 6 areas = 30 possible extra points)
    • A paper that answers the following question:
      • How will I apply what I have learned about this topic (instructor must pre-approve & assign the topic) in the classroom or in my interaction with my student(s)?
    • All extra credit must be approved in advance and in writing by the instructor.
